<br />
<br />
I've done a pass of touch ups on the painting over the last two days (intermittently working on a few different paintings), and figured I'd post the updated version.<br />
<br />
Can you spot the changes? Spoiler alert - there is a cheat sheet at the end of this post.<br />
<br />
I suspect the most obvious change is where I lightened and brightened (saturated) the tops of the large rock masses to try to get them to illuminate. All the other changes are more subtle:<br />
<br />
#1 There is only one very slight compositional change. After I had a chance to look at the painting with a fresh eye, I didn't like how there was a diagonal line that threw the eye right out of the painting in the lower right. I introduced another tiny little rock to break this line and slow down your eye as you scan upwards from the bottom of the painting.<br />
<br />
The rest of the changes are all minor value and/or color adjustments.<br />
<br />
#2 All the white water along the rocks is not even close to pure white. I left a lot of lighter value in reserve, and that made punching up the whitewater edge very easy to do. I used this to develop a visual pathway that pulls the eye back towards the breaker.<br />
<br />
#3 - One grouping of rocks looked like it was floating above the water. I reworked values and edges to get is to sit down move convincingly.<br />
<br />
#4 - I lightened all the distant water starting at the horizon to let the rocks stand up more readily.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Whenever I open a painting up like this I inevitably touch things all over the canvas. Every mark can throw off the balance elsewhere, so each mark often requires a counter mark (or 10) to bring things back into balance. I often think of the whole process of achieving luminosity as a balancing act getting everything to work in harmony. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

Here's a cheat sheet for spotting the changes (these markups are on the 'in process' version):<br />

I took a few pictures of a painting as it developed in the studio today, and I thought this might make an interesting blog post of a work in progress.<br />
<br />
This is a pretty big piece (15 x 30 inches). <br />
<br />
I started the painting by toning the canvas using transparent red oxide. I like this color for toning because it is both a warm color and transparent. Getting rid of the white canvas is really important to help get things going.<br />
<br />
In this first image, I've blocked in all the shapes using a dark mixture of the red oxide and ultramarine blue. I've also established the sky so that I can identify the lightest lights (and compare all other marks against these lights), and I've quickly wiped out some of the tone color to establish where I'm going to introduce a breaking wave.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZt_G7Nl6xNWAAaWfw5FvMKM0eDG6wsGRxRIYkEdWd2kc0TXnNNbQ_zwoQo3w8NpOrxfKnkarRmMeVC5Oo4Ion2FRX_lLGxTeSvNarBhFP7tNDNIPVO5qtrC2n8f2fCdwQFXSQkFJjWphyphenhyphen/s1600/DSC_9379.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZt_G7Nl6xNWAAaWfw5FvMKM0eDG6wsGRxRIYkEdWd2kc0TXnNNbQ_zwoQo3w8NpOrxfKnkarRmMeVC5Oo4Ion2FRX_lLGxTeSvNarBhFP7tNDNIPVO5qtrC2n8f2fCdwQFXSQkFJjWphyphenhyphen/s320/DSC_9379.JPG" width="159" /></a></div>
<br />
I tend to work on the whole canvas at once, focusing on whatever is most 'off' at any point in time. At this phase I have the darkest darks (rocks) and the lightest lights (the sky) established. What is most off are the mid-values (the water), so I'll start to work that in ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZbE4aiUuVmZF4GyLPE2lnto4qcxMNDAC0IF-G3LWf02i83o2eLI4ixkw7hW-Y_ivT-tCbVmCdoi2VBEbaglfXcEsUdBKo-3i27Q3V4UROXUaHSwvMqEadz8E2Fro44HulRbXRAuG6DkY/s1600/DSC_9380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZbE4aiUuVmZF4GyLPE2lnto4qcxMNDAC0IF-G3LWf02i83o2eLI4ixkw7hW-Y_ivT-tCbVmCdoi2VBEbaglfXcEsUdBKo-3i27Q3V4UROXUaHSwvMqEadz8E2Fro44HulRbXRAuG6DkY/s320/DSC_9380.JPG" width="160" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I need to work in the shadow values of the cast shadow on the whitewater foam. These are some of the trickier values because these could be considered a white in shadow. These need to be recognizable as part of the darks in the painting, but they need to be closest to the lights. It's a fine balancing act to get it right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9HtUj_706TK5pQIQK4-vqx-NjpQ4pK9oO4Bn-oMCu-8ZFYPOPG9GY6VS39SZqSAyLotdF_fVXN-y1dPi9yaoRwr3pd-TvDM1mRbZv9gqX0wPkIsHOGMKUS8e9FyJbpvHDYr1RpXbrD3J/s1600/DSC_9381.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9HtUj_706TK5pQIQK4-vqx-NjpQ4pK9oO4Bn-oMCu-8ZFYPOPG9GY6VS39SZqSAyLotdF_fVXN-y1dPi9yaoRwr3pd-TvDM1mRbZv9gqX0wPkIsHOGMKUS8e9FyJbpvHDYr1RpXbrD3J/s320/DSC_9381.JPG" width="158" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I get to this point for the first time I start to get a sense of luminosity on in the painting (at least in one spot). Here's a closeup where I got that important first important rush of capturing the 'light envelope' (that elusive quality gives a painting glow)... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiq1Fsl4CsgBX02cURrvlR5UkB0A-QpMy7qp3M2u6zh9Bot6rq5F1C1a-mDCI2lcAKSjbU6mgj_byz8ZNDx3q-f8plQHcx0pBG7vvJx7lkjN6c8gJr4fkbwu2Nl8Jbqmkmc72GcpPtjdo/s1600/DSC_9382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiq1Fsl4CsgBX02cURrvlR5UkB0A-QpMy7qp3M2u6zh9Bot6rq5F1C1a-mDCI2lcAKSjbU6mgj_byz8ZNDx3q-f8plQHcx0pBG7vvJx7lkjN6c8gJr4fkbwu2Nl8Jbqmkmc72GcpPtjdo/s320/DSC_9382.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It's rough still, but it's there. The edges are still too hard, and lots of the toned canvas is still showing. But at the intersection of the rocks, their cast shadows and the lighter water it is just starting to 'glow'.<br />
<br />
Notice too how blue the whitewater is and looks. Part of it is that I'm staying far away from white so that I have lighter values in reserve for later on. It also looks very blue here because the red toned canvas is still so visible. a cool color (blue) next to a warm (red) will look ever cooler. When the red eventually gets covered, the blue will look less intense. This is called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_effect" target="_blank">simultaneous contrast</a>, and is one of the trickiest parts of painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6MhqQoLG3l0sHaSnr43w8pDxbuS4FTJq_VBh1Lpp_QAAW2ILtpPiCJ3boUgshE9sH73IZnDx_wbmM7uUx6U7XQWO33ttth9XcYrU-WUJHxxEqbrgSczcJc7levUyV3uRtnp_BPQIAbakb/s1600/DSC_9382-bw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6MhqQoLG3l0sHaSnr43w8pDxbuS4FTJq_VBh1Lpp_QAAW2ILtpPiCJ3boUgshE9sH73IZnDx_wbmM7uUx6U7XQWO33ttth9XcYrU-WUJHxxEqbrgSczcJc7levUyV3uRtnp_BPQIAbakb/s320/DSC_9382-bw.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's a black and white of that detail. It is the value (darks and lights) that make a painting glow (NOT the colors as is so often mistakenly assumed). The black and white is a nice way to analyze a painting to see if the values are working.<br />
<br />
Also notice how the red toned canvas a the greens in the water (far right) virtually merge in the black and white image. This is because they are the same value. Try to squint at the color version so see this value relationship. It's hard to see - right? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41KtBlMS4WI-Eg9nWDXBSw3b8m2pVRtcLfMYsCSZi80V1vZSsJKwHtT3w-e6rGMSiFifx978PPfNxPlRzilITgJDUU9VHARabNypSUZZB5ZWpa8PBbanhooknSzRgXgDyVZJ2YP6mY7qC/s1600/DSC_9384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41KtBlMS4WI-Eg9nWDXBSw3b8m2pVRtcLfMYsCSZi80V1vZSsJKwHtT3w-e6rGMSiFifx978PPfNxPlRzilITgJDUU9VHARabNypSUZZB5ZWpa8PBbanhooknSzRgXgDyVZJ2YP6mY7qC/s320/DSC_9384.JPG" width="160" /></a></div>
<br />
Continuing on, I get the canvas covered so that I can see everything in relation to everything else.<br />
<br />
I then work across the whole painting making adjustments so that each element reads the way I want in relation to all the other elements of the painting. Because of simultaneous contrast, it can't really make these kinds of adjustments until the canvas is covered. All decisions are about relationships, and you can't evaluate a relationship without all the pieces being available for comparison.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Coastal Calligraphy" (in process), Oil, 15x30</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is where I left it for the day. I'll work on it again tomorrow, but getting the whole canvas covered with a decent sense of the 'light envelope' is a good stopping point. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mxGUljmSJDYCKj2HR3vcBAFEvihIT8UEjzOvwBWG_G2b4Zl6IxIQis0wrJJFh-sVFDPS4ZyvYCHhjjVB1OdWimtCx1Alt1flpsSOBE2Pwcugd1LhygamUC243l3DE-DGUotYLF-LAow7/s1600/DSC_9387-bw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mxGUljmSJDYCKj2HR3vcBAFEvihIT8UEjzOvwBWG_G2b4Zl6IxIQis0wrJJFh-sVFDPS4ZyvYCHhjjVB1OdWimtCx1Alt1flpsSOBE2Pwcugd1LhygamUC243l3DE-DGUotYLF-LAow7/s320/DSC_9387-bw.jpg" width="160" /></a></div>
<br />
... and finally, a B&W of the piece as it stands today to help see the value map of the painting.<br />
<br />

I went out to paint in the early morning this week. I was up in the dark and drove for over an hour through the mountains to catch the rising sun and early light at the coast.<br />
<br />
It was beautiful painting, but what made the day most memorable was all the wacky things I came across through the day:<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>First off, I was startled by a huge deer with a massive rack standing just 3 feet from the road as I drove by in the dark through the mountains. He just watched me drive on by and didn't flinch a bit even with me so close. I guess if he's lived this long he knows what he's doing when around mountain roads</li>
<li>another deer ran across the road just 25 feet in front of me as I turned a switchback going up the mountain</li>
<li>family of sea otters</li>
<li>dolphins</li>
<li>pod of killer whales</li>
<li>seals</li>
<li>pair of airplanes practicing aerial writing (they were just making pattens, not sure what else this could have been).</li>
<li>a different biplane doing stunts, dives and stalls</li>
<li>and to wrap it up, a skinny dipper out enjoying the surf and prancing around the pescadero beach.</li>
</ul>
Here are a pair of paintings from the day:<br />

Thought I'd post a quick example of how value makes the painting. Value, or dark and light, is what holds a painting together. <br />
<br />
Here's a recently finished oil painting done from some studies along the American River:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkiagFeOLRH7rU4HYxMAffHG7w5BwFWjt35x5o51jLmSE3YolNzxqXb-K4VJ8altesVeU-yJXu8SkYyFl_wiZi6algBV4tOG1fb2WW0kqF8l6_IKiTeinBi8ha-pvsEkGnH4Sm0pjl8swA/s1600/American-Splendor-900px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkiagFeOLRH7rU4HYxMAffHG7w5BwFWjt35x5o51jLmSE3YolNzxqXb-K4VJ8altesVeU-yJXu8SkYyFl_wiZi6algBV4tOG1fb2WW0kqF8l6_IKiTeinBi8ha-pvsEkGnH4Sm0pjl8swA/s320/American-Splendor-900px.jpg" width="320" /><br />"American Splendor", 12x16, Oil </a></div>
<br />
I started this piece with a neutral underpainting value study. I first quickly toned the canvas with a bright yellow rubbed out with gamsol thinner. I then painting with a thin purple/yellow mixture that is fairly neutralized (but not a completely neutral grey). This resulted in a monochromatic painting that lays out both the complete composition and value (dark/light) structure of the painting:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0Qx555oVyL224s1UDY9jOfy2UVK50exDgAyQWkYTxP1MSw3WkCfMver166n-Ild6bnzKf6T_PGLiSXuyi9EQvjcWkb1QFP_baxruri6kxR3tI_YPNfzm2Z34QFQGW13kOcrI4O9bHJAUw/s1600/American-Splendor-Underpainting-900px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0Qx555oVyL224s1UDY9jOfy2UVK50exDgAyQWkYTxP1MSw3WkCfMver166n-Ild6bnzKf6T_PGLiSXuyi9EQvjcWkb1QFP_baxruri6kxR3tI_YPNfzm2Z34QFQGW13kOcrI4O9bHJAUw/s320/American-Splendor-Underpainting-900px.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Notice how monochromatic does not necessarily mean black and white (nor grey). You can paint monochromatically with any single dark color. It just means one (mono) color.<br />
<br />
It's interesting to compare this underpainting (above) to a black-and-white version of the completed painting (below). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-DR_GLSkCZVOmVNOOu7kLnVHWJ80jg-z_tXBGSxRsDEftKepqTIqtXZTb0sVOob6EusRY0K3OgW96JM9uXhdzHQzdDd7iEx35o36MADjpiQPy8TFRBHk_fDXReZA28Q5ZiiI5GEL3uvW9/s1600/American-Splendor-900px-B&W.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-DR_GLSkCZVOmVNOOu7kLnVHWJ80jg-z_tXBGSxRsDEftKepqTIqtXZTb0sVOob6EusRY0K3OgW96JM9uXhdzHQzdDd7iEx35o36MADjpiQPy8TFRBHk_fDXReZA28Q5ZiiI5GEL3uvW9/s320/American-Splendor-900px-B&W.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you compare the monochromatic and B&W versions, it's obvious there is a lot more color in the
monochromatic underpainting than you might first think. By starting with a value study, I find I can work out lots of problems and design pleasing paintings before even starting to consider color. This is a great way to simplify the painting process. </div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I just launched a new completely rebuilt website.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">For some time I’ve envisioned a site I could use to manage my
entire art inventory.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It had been getting
more and more complicated to track paintings out at galleries and shows.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It had been almost impossible for collectors
to find paintings of the appropriate size on my website.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It had been impossible to post multiple
images of paintings (with and without frames).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>My site just wasn’t scaling.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I imagined an “amazon-like” website with clickable filters
to find paintings by size, subject, media, cost and/or location.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">If figured that I have lots of experience given my high-tech
background, and that I l could leverage this brave new outsourced world to find
someone to efficiently (and economically) build me a new site.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In high-tech I’ve developed huge projects
using teams from different countries.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>How hard could it be to build a new website?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Trick is – I don’t have the same kind of
budget in my art business that I’ve had in the past with venture capital backed
startups.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Knowing how important it is to carefully document what one wants
to build if you’re working with people who are far away and for whom English is
a second language, I carefully specified what I wanted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Then I put the project out to bid on
<a href="http://www.odesk.com/">www.odesk.com</a>, an outsourcing website that lets employers find contractors from
around the world.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I had bids come in from literally everywhere – India, China,
Africa, Russia.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At least 20 people
replied to my post within 24 hours.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wow
I thought.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This might really work.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I interviewed and picked someone from St. Petersburg to do
the site.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He got the new site half way
built, but when I paid him for 50% of the work he apparently decided to cut and
run.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He left the site in an unusable
state, and I had to throw out all that work and start over.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">On my second try, I again put it out to bid and got someone
from Romania to build the site.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
really did a great job, but when he was 80% done he too cut and run.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Said he had an emergency come up, and he
stopped replying to emails.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At least he
left me with some working code, and I was smarter this time and had insisted up
front that I’d only pay once it was done. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">For the third phase I decided to work on it myself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is a big complicated site with lots of
backend code do this the advanced filtering that I wanted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have a software background (somewhat dated
at this point), but I’m happy to say that I was able to get in there and fix
the worst of the problems.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Good news is
that I proved to myself that I could figure it out and support the site.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Bad news – it was going to talk way too much of
my time to get it launched.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Forth phase – back out to bid.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This time I figured I had a very specific
list tasks I needed done, and this might be better suited for an odesk
contractor.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I found someone in India who
seemed to have a strong background, but once he started I realized that much of
what I was doing was out of his league.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He fixed a few things, but there was still more to do.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">So this last weekend I just buckled down to see if I could
get this done myself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Two very long days
later, and I have the site launched.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">That was a painful birth four months in the making.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was much harder than I had imagined when I
started, but I’m really thankful that I’m there now.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Let’s just hope it doesn’t blow up this week </span><span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">You can find the new site at:<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span></span><a href="http://www.timonsloane.com/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">www.timonsloane.com</span></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Check it out, and drop me a note if you find any problems or
if you have some feedback.</span></div>

I’m just now beginning to feel fully recovered from a week spent in the Los Gatos Plein Air festival. These events are truly exhausting. Invited artists from around the country come into town to paint for 5 days (mixing in social events throughout the week). On Friday we deliver one piece for auction at for evening gala, and then the next morning we deliver more work and a big show goes up in the town square. All the work needs to be framed and gallery ready. <br />

People often just don't appreciate just how much work it is to paint and frame like a manaic for a whole week. I'm up before dawn and painting until sunset every day. On top of that, I'm often framing in the evening.<br />
<br />
I'm getting smarter as I do more of these events, and I'm taking a siesta in the middle of the day to try to keep my energy level up. I'm also trying to spend less time traveling and hunting for painting locations, and more time painting. I spent the majority of the week painting in the Portola Pastures ranch in the Palo Alto hills. This hidden treasure offers some of the last remaining grand vistas of the bay area rolling hills. I’m really pleased to have captured some paintings of these classic California views.<br />

The Los Gatos Rotary put together a terrific event. They are really going the extra mile to make this event as good as it can be. The only downside was completely out of their control – the weather. The day of the outdoor show in the downtown square was close to 100 degrees. It was unlike anything we’ve seen in some time.<br />

This last painting, “Twisted”, is 18x18 – larger than I normally work plein air. I went out to do a little 8x8, but as I was setting up my easel something possessed me and I decided to go big. It was lots of fun and I’m very happy with the result.<br />

California.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The festival is an invitational plein air painting
competition where juried artists converge on the town to paint and then show
‘wet’ paintings through the weekend.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">As artists we have just 48 hours to paint.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We arrive on Wednesday evening to get our
canvases stamped on the back, and then we’re off and running.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Running can really be the operative word
here, because if the weather is bad you can spend a lot of time driving while
seeking out better conditions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Wednesday evening and Thursday were both lousy days for
painting – overcast and dreary.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>On
Wednesday I drove back into the valley hoping to find good weather.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>It was dreary, cold and windy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I
did a painting – but only because I was feeling the pressure to get started.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Thursday morning was no better.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I wound up driving 40 miles south along the
coast.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I finally came across good
weather, and was able to paint atop a cliff looking down into the Big Sur
coastline.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When you’re standing in good
weather it’s hard to imagine that it’s bad elsewhere.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I made this mistake and figured the weather
must have improved back in Carmel, so I headed back and wound up mired in the
fog again.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I was checking the weather forecast Thursday night and it
looked pretty bleak for Friday.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Lots of
fog was projected.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To my great surprise,
when I got up and stepped outside the light was just terrific.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I skipped breakfast and didn’t even stop for
a cup of coffee.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Instead, I headed
straight for the coast and got two paintings finished before 11am – both
painted from the same spot.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As it turns
out, these were the two paintings that I entered and sold over the weekend.</span></div>

What a great trip. Terrific light and good weather (while it was raining away back home). Well worth the effort to get myself away for a week.Timon Sloanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18080823973016924963noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4709928982276428724.post-53214830961785439862012-03-31T15:29:00.000-07:002012-03-31T15:29:16.251-07:00Richard McKinley workshopI just spent the better part of the week in Santa Barbara, CA painting.<br />
<br />
I took a workshop with Richard McKinley. This is the second time I've taken one of his workshops, and he's the only painter that I've ever felt motivated to study with more than once. At the first workshop of his that I took I think I was the only one (of 18 or so) who hadn't taken a workshop with him before. I remember thinking that I couldn't imaging taking a workshop with anyone multiple times (usually I feel like I learn what I can from each instructor and move on). To my surprise, here I was 2 years later back for another dose.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi25Xb6peEoRJbFc2mNrKc2PDAwAU0qXtgcG0CW702BqQHMbyi_BywJP-V3CSaEHfbfxtavWgIFPyGiWUlXAPK5bCrRP_FHPwxtkS2GVoqzHgr5rrPh4LAEfs4qGhuRrnneCh87VmcKxXDt/s1600/IMG_8992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi25Xb6peEoRJbFc2mNrKc2PDAwAU0qXtgcG0CW702BqQHMbyi_BywJP-V3CSaEHfbfxtavWgIFPyGiWUlXAPK5bCrRP_FHPwxtkS2GVoqzHgr5rrPh4LAEfs4qGhuRrnneCh87VmcKxXDt/s320/IMG_8992.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This time it was an oil painting workshop (Richard is best known as a pastel instructor). I've been getting back into the oils, so when I got a call that a spot opened up on the waiting list I figured I'd give it a go.<br />
<br />
Richard has boundless knowledge that he's more than happy to share, and a unique capacity to help painters at all levels. He has a unique capacity to talk while he demos, usually discussing what he's thinking and doing but also to be able to answer arbitrary questions that might not even be related to the painting in process. <br />
<br />
Richard also demos a different technique during every demo. At the first workshop he demoed twice a day for 5 days in a row. That's totally unheard of. This time around he demoed once each of the 3 days of the workshop.<br />
<br />
If you ever get a chance, I'd highly recommend one of his workshops.<br />
<br />
I'll post some paintings from the trip in the next day or so.Timon Sloanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18080823973016924963noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4709928982276428724.post-52789015741113454202012-02-10T20:34:00.000-08:002012-02-10T20:34:51.032-08:00Studio Painting ProcessI recently used one of my Point Lobos studies to do this larger pastel painting in the studio ... <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsG83xa8XvO_oN1EpIgq2UFWL9rAnemi2001F94sWHaviUPYx9v6kS3xzs2bjQZA3W-hYGC6ybgqxXHD4g9vfYFTqasn82PFQ-7QCnGbvQQRlOy5eudPzcGcsJnMeMQTIXL_ZCEV_BQDuE/s1600/Sertpentine-Coast-900px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsG83xa8XvO_oN1EpIgq2UFWL9rAnemi2001F94sWHaviUPYx9v6kS3xzs2bjQZA3W-hYGC6ybgqxXHD4g9vfYFTqasn82PFQ-7QCnGbvQQRlOy5eudPzcGcsJnMeMQTIXL_ZCEV_BQDuE/s320/Sertpentine-Coast-900px.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Serpentine Coast", Pastel, 18x24</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
Here are a couple of shots of the pastel painting in process. First I started with blocking in some of the darker shapes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDU2ihT-zoXLZF3i5l1wplg4b1n-bSxbuILEgo0hGFOHAXf1MRvIKOA6omojCp4ZPbZpmIdCEKqUQMpWWVPAX0n0ZQI875EXhi_tfstO4N4gFJQr9JGCA6CKx_bDImHu_x9bgTBz1HvRgO/s1600/process-1---underpainting-800px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDU2ihT-zoXLZF3i5l1wplg4b1n-bSxbuILEgo0hGFOHAXf1MRvIKOA6omojCp4ZPbZpmIdCEKqUQMpWWVPAX0n0ZQI875EXhi_tfstO4N4gFJQr9JGCA6CKx_bDImHu_x9bgTBz1HvRgO/s320/process-1---underpainting-800px.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I then washed this down with isopropyl alchohol using a large brush. This turns the dry pastel into something very close to watercolor, and it sinks into the painting surface. This process allows me to quickly establish the composition and the major shapes. It also sets up my darks and established some initial color I can then react to as I develop the painting.<br />
<br />
Notice I don't underpaint the sky. I did lay in a bit of pink right at the horizon, but I wanted to use the color of the board as the underpainting for the sky. I also find underpainting tends to darken things, and I find it essential to keep the sky light to generate a feeling of luminosity.<br />
<br />
I unfortunately don't have a picture of the painting just after finishing the underpainting - so you'll have to use your imagination.<br />
<br />
Here's my studio setup. I have both a swivel mounted computer monitor (on the left) and my framed plein air study on the right.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjQkb-xJkaXEX0FHKvPPXG03A2fzgPt7aVcrruh7yFb3jQ0EZ5vZ6eS33EAEZ9_hx-2DcOXiLWUaV-lsS0rtWeSfY0h-uDBHhLpEpJJtVozwaNtxa7HajLajsjtsGjcZBme22_IFgSnXR2/s1600/on-the-easel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjQkb-xJkaXEX0FHKvPPXG03A2fzgPt7aVcrruh7yFb3jQ0EZ5vZ6eS33EAEZ9_hx-2DcOXiLWUaV-lsS0rtWeSfY0h-uDBHhLpEpJJtVozwaNtxa7HajLajsjtsGjcZBme22_IFgSnXR2/s320/on-the-easel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Here's the painting as it develops. See the tree on the foreground rock? I completely scrubbed it out because I thought it was looking overworked, and once it was gone I thought the painting was stronger as it let the eye move into the painting a little more easily. This painting has a number of different secondary subject areas, and I decided simpler would be better ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp91rg768xAdt9tDEb7FGlyYeZdxc6md_4bv7mEXYfdSRDoq2-5t36AHQOOa3oDa8NlVwhW0EB7Rs_yKY5mcoI3mBiHBERkYZPlDJpJWp-oTKr9RsMzQQSPZcnR12SVhpUy42fxGM5VFVY/s1600/process-2-800px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp91rg768xAdt9tDEb7FGlyYeZdxc6md_4bv7mEXYfdSRDoq2-5t36AHQOOa3oDa8NlVwhW0EB7Rs_yKY5mcoI3mBiHBERkYZPlDJpJWp-oTKr9RsMzQQSPZcnR12SVhpUy42fxGM5VFVY/s320/process-2-800px.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And then the final piece:<br />

<br />
Sunday afternoon I was checking out the weather forecast and it looked like fabulous weather was headed for Carmel. I fired off some emails, and in less than 12 hours I was down in Carmel. Both Kim Lordier and Paul Kratter were nimble enough to swap their busy schedules around to meet me down there.<br />
<br />
This iconic location is truly one of the most remarkable and beautiful locations, and such a joy to paint.<br />

It's just awesome having some friends who are flexible enough (and crazy enough) to make it on a trip like this. We had a great time, got lots of terrific work done, and kept kicking ourselves that we get to do this for a living. Sure beats working in the coal mines (where both my wife's grandfathers made their living). <br />

I've never seen anything like it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBcjpIGBmcAZ_8aAZBjWVi9Isp6QHKyRJJwR4TVD74V4c8z1XDNL8Yvo2gyhQUHOkTF7sfMoaEoHblpPFFjqhXdSmNRFuMNp9hgii0H5rZioVgA6E3RkyHqlVH2l1AJo2UoJk9uyEfTZXO/s1600/P1020171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBcjpIGBmcAZ_8aAZBjWVi9Isp6QHKyRJJwR4TVD74V4c8z1XDNL8Yvo2gyhQUHOkTF7sfMoaEoHblpPFFjqhXdSmNRFuMNp9hgii0H5rZioVgA6E3RkyHqlVH2l1AJo2UoJk9uyEfTZXO/s320/P1020171.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
It looked like 3 of 4 layered disks, but it also had these funky dark holes punched through it. Very weird.<br />
<br />
Anyone know what this type of cloud might be called?Timon Sloanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18080823973016924963noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4709928982276428724.post-68218309868832515262011-09-06T15:11:00.000-07:002011-09-06T15:11:59.702-07:00Some More From The Sierra TripHere are a few more images from my recent Sierra trip. This first one was a quick stream study I did as we were hiking in:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG3Kw5XHM-EL8AELMgiS47CHVColKsyGIKiSJkjWqiz9rjhOpMm6wI4Q4Wia18oymQUYg8TFueW1AWalgFJsbQuEHqG8Y7dF2hH2qwb5MPcltXlUpId4TrR6pl1wOW-l_8qadNKvwMuXZV/s1600/Sierra-Stream-Mini-900px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG3Kw5XHM-EL8AELMgiS47CHVColKsyGIKiSJkjWqiz9rjhOpMm6wI4Q4Wia18oymQUYg8TFueW1AWalgFJsbQuEHqG8Y7dF2hH2qwb5MPcltXlUpId4TrR6pl1wOW-l_8qadNKvwMuXZV/s320/Sierra-Stream-Mini-900px.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Sierra Stream Mini", 6x6, Pastel</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
For this painting I setup just along the trail, and then of course our mule train with all our gear caught up with me and wanted to pass. I cleared out what I though was enough room, but that last mule in the lineup must have been really curious. He swung over towards me and his pack whacked my pastel box. Luckily I saw him coming and I jumped forward and grabbed my box before the impact. I kept things mostly intact. My box got scrambled and required some cleanup, but only one stick was broken. That could have been a disastrous way to start the trip!<br />
<br />
Then the next morning I woke at daybreak and painting this view. What a place to wake up and have my first morning cup of coffee! I think the view woke me more than the caffeine.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://timonsloane.com/artwork/gallery2/d/745-5/Pacific-Fireworks-900px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://timonsloane.com/artwork/gallery2/d/745-5/Pacific-Fireworks-900px.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
As humans, we are naturally drawn to any figures or people that appear in paintings. I've been trying to add these figures in such a way that they are not the immediate focus of the painting, but rather fun discoveries one can make while looking more closely.<br />
<br />
In this painting the figures are particularly small. Click on it to see a larger image of the painting if you can't find them ... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://timonsloane.com/artwork/gallery2/d/711-2/Making-Memories-900px.jpg"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://timonsloane.com/artwork/gallery2/d/725-3/Hidden-Cove-900px.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
http://timonsloane.com/artwork/gallery2/v/Hidden-Cove-900px.jpg.html</div><br />
<br />
What I particularly like is that by using figures I can more explicit control the sense of scale in the painting. In pure landscapes, it can be hard to imply the true sense of grandeur or vastness of a scene. With a figure added, we suddenly read everything in relation to the scale of the figure.<br />

If you have any trouble viewing it, please drop me an e-mail. This is the first time I've integrated a video into my website, and the process of converting the video format and installing a flash video viewer wasn't as trivial as one might hope/expect. I looked all foggy and overcast as we were checking in, but then magically the skies cleared and we had really nice weather for both of the painting days. Aside from some high winds, it was perfect.<br />
<br />
I was up in the dark painting in the morning, and painting through sunset each day. Here's a painting I did from the road overlooking the Carmel River. This was a good evening spot given that it was protected from the winds coming off the ocean.<br />

</tbody></table>The show days (Saturday and Sunday) we didn't have quite the same luck. There was some rain on Sunday, but overall it was bearable.<br />
<br />
I love Carmel. It really is my favorate place to paint. There's so much variety and beauty in such a condensed area. And since Monterey is a peninsula, I can find morning and evening locations with terrific lighting by flipping back and forth between eastern and western views.Timon Sloanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18080823973016924963noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4709928982276428724.post-22342533958426086262011-03-20T16:26:00.000-07:002011-03-20T17:03:48.850-07:00Capturing a brief momentI was out painting on the coast a few weeks ago, and as the sun was coming up there was this brief moment when the ocean's foam glowed as it reflected the pink light of the sky. I did a quick plein air study, and then just recently did this small version of the scene for an upcoming mini show ...<br />

</tbody></table>One of the great things about plein air painting (vs painting from photos) is the opportunity to meld together a series of visual phenomena that might occur over the course of doing a painting. This is one perfect example of such a 'mash up', and I named the painting to reflect the fleeting nature of the moment.Timon Sloanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18080823973016924963noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4709928982276428724.post-56551580684187817462011-03-13T15:44:00.000-07:002011-07-12T10:19:30.958-07:00Evening's Inkling Just recently finished an 18x24 pastel, starting it from plein air studies and then finishing it in the field. I like working this way, but an 18x24 is a bit unwieldy when it gets windy. <br />
